Peace Corps Week Happy Hour and Write Your Reps Event!
A great group came out on Wednesday, March 1st for our monthly Happy Hour with an advocacy twist!
Peace Corps Week Service Event at Grow Philly Farm!
We had a hearty group of RPCVs brave the cold, windy weather to help the Grow Philly farm get ready for spring planting. Volunteers helped mulch rows and top off the growing mounds with fresh dirt. RPCVs joined volunteers from the Burmese Karen community who benefit from the gardens. We wrapped it up with some pizza in the hoop tent which was the warmest place to be found.
Peace Corps Association
Peace Corps Week Story Slam at the Free Library
RPCVs gathered to kick off Peace Corps week on February 26th with some storytelling Peace Corps style. Stories were shared about how host country nationals show hospitality. Some were funny, some were moving, and some brought us right back to our own service. Thank you to all of those who shared their stories and those who just came out to listen.
Mark your calendars for Peace Corps Week: February 25-March 3
Peace Corps Week commemorates President Kennedy’s establishment of the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961. During this annual event, the Peace Corps community celebrates all the ways that Peace Corps makes a difference at home and abroad. PAPCA invites you to join us for the following Peace Corps Week activities.
Peace Corps Panel
Tuesday (2/27), 6-7:30pm
Kick off Peace Corps Week with a Third Goal event! We're looking for volunteers to speak on a panel about Peace Corps service. The panel will be 6-7:30 in the city, exact location TBD. If you're interested, fill out a form here, and we'll follow up with more details. Don't worry - expressing interest doesn't commit you to the panel; it just lets us know you want to learn more.
National Days of Action
Thursday (3/1), Washington DC
Join the National Peace Corps Association in Washington DC to advocate for a bigger, better Peace Corps. Please register or sign up here if you haven't already, and let PAPCA Service and Advocacy Chair Dominique Ellis (firstname.lastname@example.org) know if you plan to attend.
Saturday (3/3), Dock Street Cannery and Lounge, 5:30-7:30pm
Everyone's favorite PAPCA activity is back! Prepare your 3-5 minute story related to this year's Peace Corps Week theme, Highlighting Home. Tell us about a time during service that you felt particularly connected to something or someone back home, about a time you felt similarities or differences between your country of service and Philadelphia, about what it felt like to be abroad when something big was happening at home, or even about that time you saw someone at site wearing an Eagles jersey. Sign up to tell a story here -- you'll get some sweet Peace Corps swag if you do.
Monthly Happy Hour
Wednesday (3/7), 6pm
Our monthly happy hour will take place right in the middle of our Peace Corps festivities. Happy hours are a great opportunity to casually meet up with Peace Corps friends, old and new. We're working on finding just the right place for this special happy hour event. Keep your eyes open for more details on Facebook and in an upcoming email.
Thursday (3/8), URBN Annex Screening Room, 7-9pm
Join us for a screening of the documentary 27 Months, a unique and intimate look at the service of Peace Corps volunteers in Liberia, the Philippines, and Azerbaijan. Bring a friend, family member, or prospective volunteer so they can better understand the challenges, successes, and daily realities of life as a volunteer.
A big thank you to the local Peace Corps office, our partner for many of these Peace Corps week activities!
